MFM Fellowship

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is a 428-bed teaching hospital, which is part of the Trinity Health System's network of 43 hospitals and clinics across the country. The SJMO site is located in southeastern Michigan (part of the Detroit metropolitan statistical area) and serves a diverse patient population. We provide care to the most affluent community in Michigan, as well as one of the most impoverished. We are a long-standing member of the MSU Statewide Campus OPTI Consortium, as well as Wayne State University SEMCME (South East Michigan Council on Medical Education). We provide rotations to all osteopathic medical students, and currently serve as a base hospital for Kansas City University of Medicine and Bio-Science (KCUMB) and Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

SJMO has had an Osteopathic OB-Gyn residency program for almost twenty years. The program was recently inspected, and received five-years of accreditation, with 4 residents per year. Currently, there are approximately 3000 deliveries a year at the hospital. An Osteopathic Traditional Internship Program was started in July, 2008. It is our intent to expand osteopathic post-graduate educational opportunities in our institution. A fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine would allow us to provide valuable care to our community, build on the strengths of our existing OB-Gyn residency program, and provide fellowship training for interested and qualified candidates.

As in most hospital markets, the face of health care in the greater Detroit area has undergone some dramatic changes in the last few years. Recently, a hospital located within 2 miles of SJMO closed its Pediatrics and OB units. SJMO has a 20 bed NICU, with plans to increase it to 30 in the next fiscal year, 4 neonatologists, pediatric surgeons on staff, as well as pediatric cardiologists. Patients previously served by the community hospital that closed, now receive their care at SJMO. Consequently, patient volumes have increased in a rather dramatic way. A large percentage of these patients are high-risk. We believe that building on the outstanding training we provide in the OB-Gyn residency, coupled with the increase in high-risk OB we are performing due to a hospital closure, makes us well situated to develop and deliver high quality training in maternal fetal medicine.

As with all the graduate medical education programs at SJMO, it is our intent that the Fellows in Maternal Fetal Medicine will be exposed to a very thorough core curriculum, core competencies, clinical teaching conferences, and supervised procedures. While the program will be highly structured, there will be ample time for self-study and independent inquiry. Contact June Murphy; cell phone 810-875-1398 or office 248-858-6762
